THE CASHLITE GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
A shared home needs a shared plan.
A household budget keeps common expenses in one place. Roommates, couples and families can agree on the costs they share, record who paid, and review any balances at the end of each month.
Decide what belongs in the household budget.
Start with rent, groceries, electricity, internet and household supplies. Keep personal purchases separate. Agree before a purchase if it is unclear whether everyone should contribute.
Choose a split that everyone understands.
An equal split is simple for roommates sharing the same costs. A couple might agree on proportional contributions based on income. There is no single rule for every household; the useful rule is one you agree on together.
Example: two roommates, one grocery budget
Alex pays 1 800 kr for shared groceries and Sam pays 1 200 kr. Total shared spending is 3 000 kr. With an equal split, each person owes 1 500 kr. Sam owes Alex 300 kr to balance their contributions.
| Person | Paid | Equal share | Balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | 1 800 kr | 1 500 kr | Receives 300 kr |
| Sam | 1 200 kr | 1 500 kr | Pays 300 kr |
Review and settle up monthly.
Choose a recurring review date. Check the expenses together, correct anything that should not be shared, and settle the net balance using a payment method you both use. Recording a settlement is different from processing a payment.
